Abstract

This article examines the characteristics of the educational courses for interned soldiers of the Ukrainian Galician Army in the Liberec and Josefov camps in Czechoslovakia during the period from 1920 to 1922. The foremen had the opportunity to attend matriculation, gymnasium, real and seminary courses there, and a whole series of practical courses was established for the riflemen, the completion of which would give them a good chance of employment in the Czechoslovak Republic and at the same time receive a decent salary. At the same time, the camps also took care of those soldiers who had low educational qualifications, organizing courses for the illiterate and semi-illiterate persons. The education of camp inmates became one of the most powerful tools for their further adaptation and socialization in the Czechoslovak Republic, which greatly facilitated the combatants’ process of integration into Czechoslovak society. The best representatives of the officers’ corps of the Ukrainian Galician Army were involved in conducting the courses, who had the necessary knowledge and skills, as well as patriotic feelings and a desire to prepare their fellow countrymen for a long stay in a foreign country. Because of this, all educational centers (schools, clubs, courses) operating in the camps also fulfilled an important national mission, which consisted of preserving the Ukrainian culture, language, and historical memory of the interned soldiers.
